I began weaving in 1973 in Corpus Christi, Texas. My boyfriend at the time was an art student who had become involved in sailing. He didn’t want to be stuck in a classroom for the spring semester, so he opted for an independent study project: building a loom. His professor accepted his project with one condition. The loom had to work. As he had absolutely no interest in learning to weave, I learned to weave and wove his project for him. I was hooked! My first piece sold at his student art show under his name.
The loom was an 8-harness counter balance with a 60” weaving width. We moved the loom with us from Texas to Oklahoma, where I sat up a shop weaving and selling rugs, bags, pillows, ponchos, etc. From Oklahoma we and the loom moved to West Virginia, where I learned Overshot and other Colonial weaves. We got married and I gave birth to a daughter in 1975. From there, in 1976, we moved to Flagstaff, AZ. In Flagstaff I managed and operated The Covered Bridge Weaving Studio & Gallery. I did production weaving and taught classes. On weekends I taught natural dyeing and candle dipping at the community Art Barn.
My daughter and I moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1979. The loom and the husband did not move with us. I still miss the loom. My weaving opportunities became sparse, mostly backstrap and inkle weaving. In 2005 I recommitted to weaving. In 2007 I took a tapestry weaving class in Taos, NM and was hooked again! In 2008 I began to seriously study tapestry weaving with master weaver James Koehler. I was still studying with James until his death in March of 2011. I was one of his apprentices, learning (among other things) the art of acid dyeing. My commitment to tapestry runs deep.
